An Interview with Defense by Design

DBD_final
We want to expose our readers to new and interesting concepts as well as link them to our friends in the industry.  With that in mind, this week we interviewed a old friend of ours Jeff McKissack.  Jeff runs a company called Defense by Design and I know some of you will find it very interesting. I cannot recommend Jeff enough. If you ever have a chance to hear him speak or want to contact him for a corporate speaking engagement, I know you will be blown away by what he has to offer….
So without further delay, here’s our interview……enjoy….

Jeff, thanks for taking the time to interview with us today.

What exactly is Defense by Design?
Defense by Design was founded to address the growing concerns of personal safety and awareness from a more psychological standpoint.  The tagline of “Predict-Prevent-Protect”, I think, sums it up nicely.  It’s really about seeing things before they escalate or turn into a tragedy.  Most of my work is as a consultant and public speaker in the corporate world.

How did you come about teaching these concepts?
It goes back to 1987 when I began working with an investigative reporter for 60 Minutes, 20/20, and NBC News.  In addition to teaching a child/teen safety program this gentlemen developed after 10 years of interviewing convicted criminals in prisons and mental hospitals, I was able to work with him on national news segments and specials involving many of these areas of violence and exploitation.  The media is much more forthcoming in sharing information than many of our law-enforcement agencies (local, state or federal), and most will readily admit to that fact.  But the media, by its nature, “broadcasts” its findings.  We just turned interviews and information into marketable programs and seminars.

Who are your typical clients?
Rather than various vertical markets such as restaurants, hotels, retail chains, etc. most of my work is more directly associated with certain key positions within a company.  These are typically professionals in the HR and Risk Management arenas along with their Property Casualty provider or underwriter.  These professionals best understand the need and benefits to proactive prevention as well as the documentation of such initiatives.

Recently you published a book, can you tell us a bit about it so our readers can check it out?
My book, Power Proverbs for Personal Defense, is a quick read of about 100 pages.  I took the sayings our parents, grandparents and probably even great-grandparents all said to us growing up, and in 6-8 pages per 10 chapters addressed (a) the principle being conveyed, (b) stories of people who applied these rightly and wrongly, and (c) bullet points at the end of each chapter to talk about how these principles may be applied to one’s personal safety.  Some of the chapters include, “What you don’t know can hurt you”, “Do unto others as you’d have others do unto you”, “It’s better to be safe than sorry”, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and more.  It can be purchased either through Amazon or on Kindle.  I really get great responses from those who have read the book, including those with military and law-enforcement backgrounds.  It’s just another tool to help make common sense “common” again.

So what’s next on the horizon?
I am developing a licensing program to enable others to begin teaching some of what I do in the public sector.  The new website will soon be launched, Troublespotters.com, and licensed instructors will be listed on its online directory promoting them in their respective geographical areas across the country.  My goal in time is to have anywhere from 300-500 such instructors empowering their communities through prevention and education.  The goal is clearly stated in the website’s tagline, “spot trouble ‘before‘ trouble spots you!”  There’s also a YouTube weekly series in development, but “shhhhhhhhhh” it’s top secret for now (wink).

That’s all the question for now.
Big thanks to Jeff for taking the time to talk to us today.  Be sure to visit him at: http://www.defensebydesign.com
